A Traditional Sri Lankan Garden Poruwa Wedding Ceremony: Maya + Rev
It gives us so much pleasure today to present to you today’s gorgeous garden poruwa wedding ceremony.
Besties, Maya wed Rev in a traditional setting at the serene Bolgoda Lake in Sri Lanka amongst close family and friends. Their ceremony was magical, with the main Buddhist, poruwa wedding ceremony taking place under the most magnificent banyan tree you will ever see.
The couple were super chilled, describing themselves as the “anti-bride and groom.” Despite this though, we are so in love with the fine details captured ever so beautifully by the fabulous Melbourne wedding photographer, Shevan J.
A very special thanks to Maya for sharing all the festivities with us!
She Said Yes
For bride Maya, the proposal came as a total surprise.
“We were on our holiday to Bali. We travel together often, so no suspicions were really raised. During our trip, Rev surprised me with a private dinner at a restaurant which was on my to-do list. He started acting strange toward the end of dinner – pacing around he table. Then he pulled the ring out of a beach bag and somehow ended up on both knees! Some of the words were mumbled and I was in tears, but laughing at the same time!”
Nothing else mattered at that moment, as Maya ended up with a brand new shiny ring on her finger!
Garden Wedding Ceremony
Much like the couple themselves, Maya and Rev’s wedding was relaxed and very natural. Their Poruwa wedding ceremony tied in a lot of elements from the natural surroundings, with an abundance of greenery to create an elegant yet memorable occasion.
As mentioned, Maya and Rev were quite fuss-free when it came to planning a wedding. However, it’s quite clear that in the end, this day was a beautiful reflection of their style and personalities. A wonderful celebration in Sri Lanka.
Maya says that a wedding was inevitable.
“With Rev being the eldest child and me being the only child, (Maya), a wedding was inevitable. We tried to keep it as simple as possible, but elegant and memorable at the same time. We were keen to do something outdoors and close to nature.”
Both parties were supportive of Maya and Rev’s decisions, so long as they tied in all the traditions involved in a Sri Lankan Buddhist wedding.
As a result, Maya and Rev planned a traditional garden Poruwa wedding ceremony in Sri Lanka. The Poruwa itself was unconventional. So, in this instance, their majestic banyan tree acted as the platform for their wedding ceremony. The tree was beautifully draped in fragrant strands of jasmine flowers, providing a picture perfect backdrop. It was like something out of a fairy tale with the gentle breeze allowing for the jasmine garlands to sway from side to side.
“We had a traditional Sri Lankan Buddhist ‘Poruwa’ ceremony followed by high tea reception. It was all outdoors, so we kept the decor as natural as possible. We had burlap table runners, adorned with simple wooden elements and a selection of white florals with greenery scattered across the table.”
We love how the couple kept their colour palette so neutral to complement the lush greenery that surrounded them.
